Sirpa Masalin born on 7 September 1971 in Lahti, Finland
My special liking for wood as a creative material to work with began at primary school in the woodwork lessons. Charcoal and pencil drawings followed. Painting in oil was a short phase inspired by her father Reijo Masalin who himself was a professional artist in classical oil paintings.
The wood carver
The idea of producing sculptures with a chain saw consolidated at the beginning of 2004. The simple clear lines provide a great deal of scope for creating an unusual structure and giving the wood a really special identity. Many works of art turn into "recyling art" because part of the material originates from the remains of timber constructions. A "nation" of wooden sculptures came into being in 2007 with the Kansa project. These sculptures are distributed throughout the world pointing the way for the most important aspects of our time.
Art workshops - art for kids
I have been offering "art workshops" since 2006 for children and young people. The unlimited imagination and ideas of children should be promoted and encouraged. Courses are also held together with schools, youth welfare and action groups.
Theatre
2007 - the artistic adviser to the "sorcerer's apprentice" theatre project which won first place in the theatre genre at the "Children to Olymp" competition. 2008 - working on further theatre and dance projects. The experience gained from live lyric performances and the creativity from using simple material in order to create interesting stages sets are used in particular.
Lyrics, stage and radio
Writing has been an important part of the creative work since childhood. The first book of poems "Wege sind beschrieben - Tiesi on määrätty" (ways are depicted) appeared in June 2007 in Finnish and German published by Heiner Labonde. Lyric performances combining texts with sounds and percussion originated in 2006/2007 together with Hans-Ulrich Goller-Masalin with the idea of redefining poetry recital. Important events were already on the programme in 2007: the closing event at the Bad Breisig cultural festival in 2007 and an evening event at the BUGA 07 with an audience of approximately 350.
The all-day presentation of the Finnish Day also at the BUGA 07 in Gera together with Thomas Triemner on the main stage.
A series of own programmes developed at SISU Radio in 2008 as the result of a radio programme on 23 December 2007 at SISU Radio which was intended as an interview.
Intercultural dialogue
Foreign and German women have been offered the opportunity to meet in the studio since February 2007. In the meantime the informal meeting "FrauenRAUM" (room for women) has become a platform for the international exchange of ideas from many areas for example politics, society and bringing up children.
She initiated the German/Finish cultural gala to be held in Malmitalo, Helsinki, Finland in October 2008 in order to bring the German/Finish culture closer together by means of music, lyrics and art.
